New York native, Joey Bada$$ performed his new song, “When Thugs Cry” on the Australian radio station, Triple J. “When Thugs Cry” is dedicated to Prince’s 1984 song “When Doves Cry”. Before listening to Joey’s take on the song I wasn’t sure if it would be good. After I heard the entire remix, I was shook.
He began touching on black issues and the lyrics stuck with me. “Maybe I'm just like my brother/He's never satisfied/Why do we shoot at each other?/This is what it sounds like when the thugs cry” Joey sings on the chorus. He then went on to rap
Don't even know my name, and the place from what you came/Niggas love to talk, but niggas never change/Same thing, same faces on the news, this is nothin' new/This is what we knew, still hangin' by the noose
