The long-awaited ‘The Weekend’ video has arrived. For many of us, SZA’s teasing of this video has felt like torture.
Several Months ago, it was announced that the TDE songstress would be collaborating with Solange. SZA also posted an 8 second video preview via Instagram with Solange tagged. In the extremely short teaser Solana “SZA” Rowe appeared on the balcony of a building with amazing architecture.
The video left so many of us wanting more. Cardi B even took to SZA’s comments and said, “Don’t tease people like this”.
SZA is among various artists who has had an outstanding year. SZA’s CTRL album was released June 2017. Since its release, the “Consideration” songwriter has been nominated for five Grammy’s. ‘The Weekend’ single went platinum November 8th. Love Galore which featured “Antidote’ rapper, Travis Scott, also received a Platinum Certification.
This SZA and Solange collaboration is everything we hoped it would be. With Solange’s touch of style and SZA’s dance background we got a visual that was nothing short of amazing. The contemporary video opens with a poem that reads, “One opted out. An imbalance of power, shifted the whole tide. And waved”.
We then see Solana dancing gracefully on the balcony of a modern building. Then, the video transitions to her dancing in other locations. Such as, a parking lot, a warehouse, and outside of a building with gold pillars. The visual features only Rowe. We see solo SZA dancing angelically throughout the entire visual.
We also see the St. Louis native doing interpretive dancing and flaunting her flexibility. In addition, SZA appears confident and in control of her feminine power in the clip. The 4 minutes and 9 second video ends with the poem that opened the video.
The poem certainly offers a new perspective on the song’s message. ‘The Weekend’ has been referred to as a “side chick theme song”. The poem alludes to the possibility of the song describing SZA being in a love triangle and reclaiming her power by leaving her cheating lover.
