As we all know, on September 25th Cardi B’s “Bodak Yellow” bumped Taylor Swift out of the number one spot on Billboard charts. Without a doubt Cardi B has made history simply because she has become the second female rapper within 19 years, since Lauryn Hill’s “Doo Wop”, to be number one on the charts without any features. I’m extremely happy because for many people like myself I have followed her on Instagram, watched her make her way on to Love and Hip Hop, then leaving television to work on her music and now she has the top song in the country. It feels like I was a part of her journey which makes me genuinely happy for her success.
“Bardi” has been applauded for making history from many inside and outside the hip hop community. On Instagram Cardi shared photos of some celebrities who have saluted and congratulated her. Some of those celebrities were Lil Kim, Tamar Braxton, Nicki Minaj, Migos, and Charlamagne (who brought awareness to the fact that she’d make history if she goes number one several weeks ago).
Of course, there will be those who dislike that Cardi B has become number one. Some have even said that they are disappointed in the culture for “allowing” this to happen. In my opinion, its not just how fire the song is that caused it to maneuver its way to number one but it was also who Cardi is. Cardi B has such a infectious personality, it’s hard for you to not like her. Due to how many people were rooting for her on behalf of loving her and her transparency I believe that carried over into the streaming and downloading numbers.
I uploaded a post on Facebook which was dedicated to congratulating the rapper on her success and the comments were mostly positive but there was a small percent of negative comments which were along the lines of “let’s see if she can make another hit” “the song is trash” “I hate her” and worse. I wanted to reply to them so bad because I could not fathom why anyone wouldn’t want to see her win. It also perplexed me that people were commenting saying well this is just one song, where are her other hits, I bet she won’t make another one etc.
I couldn’t help but to think of a tweet that J. Cole directed to Cardi which read “also Cardi b I seen your breakfast club interview, loved it. Don’t put all that pressure on your album. You already won. Just drop and repeat” what stuck out most for me from this heartfelt tweet was the “you already won” part. It doesn’t matter if she does or doesn’t make another hit because as Cole said, she already won. Bardi has made history, forevaa, and she and her family will always be good financially because of this record.
“Bodak Yellow” has now been number one on Billboard charts for two weeks and is now eligible for 2x Platinum in the country. I do think Cardi will make more hits and fire records, she has already put out previews of records she is working on one of which has an intro with the pacing and energy similar to Meek Mill’s “Dreams and Nightmares”. I’m looking forward to hearing more music from Cardi, much love to her and congratulations.
